DVF WRAP DRESS | VOGUE 2000
It’s the 50th Anniversary of the iconic 1974 Diane Von Furstenberg Wrap Dress. To celebrate, Simplicity Creative Group has re-released the Vintage Vogue 2000 Sewing Pattern. I was invited by Simplicity to participate in the 50th Anniversary Campaign which is taking place for the entire month of February. Now, let’s get into the details of this beautiful garment.
To say that I’m in love with this pattern is a huge understatement. The wrap dress is a classic, elegant and very classy garment, which aligns with my personal style. So, when I was invited to participate in the 50th Anniversary Campaign, it was an easy yes. It’s a timeless piece of clothing and having the pattern now is a treasure for me because I didn’t own the original. Even if there are 100’s of wrap dress patterns on the market, there is only one DVF and it will continue to out live all trends.
Pattern Information
The 1970’s Vintage Vogue DVF WRAP DRESS by Diane Von Furstenberg is a classic and this is the first time it has been released from the pattern archives. The front wrap dress has two length variations, and a fitted bodice that is slightly gathered and tucked at the back. The dress can be sewn with or without the collar. It’s a fit and flare design, which I love, with attached tie-ends that you can tie at the side front or center back. Allow the ties to hang free or create a bow. It has full-length sleeves and French Cuffs.
The pattern is available on the Simplicity website in both PDF and Print formats. The sizes range from 6 – 24.
The website rates the pattern as EASY, and as you can see, the envelope says, “VERY EASY VOGUE.” As an ADVANCED level sewist, this dress was very easy for me to complete without following all the instructions. However, please keep in mind that this is a vintage pattern and the instruction sheet looks a bit different than what we see in more current patterns. I’m rating the pattern ADVANCED BEGINNER friendly. I say this because I think you need basic sewing skills with a decent amount of practice hours before attempting to sew the dress. Don’t make this your first project as a new beginner. But definitely get the pattern now, so you will have it before it is retired again. I personally think they should never retire this pattern because it’s such a timeless classic. Fabric Information
When I first saw the pattern, I knew I wanted to make it with a bold print, something that complements the vintage style. The beautiful red poppies on the black background stood out among the other prints while I was sourcing fabrics.
The pattern calls for soft fabrics such as Challis, Chambray, Pongee, Surah, Single Knits such as Jersey and Wool. I opted for a soft knit because I knew that I wanted the bodice and sleeve to be form fitting. The DOUBLE BRUSHED POLY KNIT was the perfect choice with it’s beautiful drape, light weight, and soft texture.
Close Ups Inside & Out
I love simple designs that lend to exquisite details. This pattern has all the clean lines in addition to details that earned this dress its iconic status, like the French Cuffs and Collar. No other wrap dress comes even close to what Diane Von Furstenberg created. I used my Baby Lock Soprano to sew all the main seams. The Baby Lock Vibrant finished off the seam allowances. And the Baby Lock Euphoria created clean hems without the dreaded waves that occur when knit fabric is stretched during hemming. Let’s take a closeup look at the details, inside and out.
Notions Information
There are only two suggested notions listed on the pattern envelope: SEAM BINDING and four 1/2″ BUTTONS. The seam binding is used to stabilize the front edge along the bodice and top edges of the skirt fronts and backs. See photos below. I used all four buttons, two on each cuff. You can see the buttons from the front and back views of the dress.
Alterations Information
I cut a size 10 for my dress. The only adjustment I made was to take in the sleeves. I could have cut a smaller size but I didn’t pay attention to the sizing until after I had sewn the seam. Interestingly enough, I didn’t have to make an adjustment on the sleeve cuff to accommodate the smaller sleeve opening. I stretched the sleeve opening a small amount to fit the cuff. The sleeves fit exactly as I wanted in the end.
Styling Options
I kept the styling very simple because the dress speaks for itself. The design and fabric stand out and need nothing further to highlight its beauty. I’ve styled it with a pair of basic, low heel pumps, a silver chain with flower shaped charm, a pair of matching earrings and a black, velvet clutch purse. I made reservations to take myself out to dinner tonight for Valentine’s Day. I don’t usually make a big deal over V-Day but a local restaurant has a new Plant Based Menu and I’m excited to give it a try. So, yes, I’m showing up in all my glam and I look forward to celebrating with my new dress.
How about a shorter dress?
I’m aware that some women don’t wear long dresses. So, before you leave, I’d like to show you what this dress looks like in the shorter length. So very lovely!!! I’ve never seen a long version of this!!!My mother had an actual DVF dress back in the day and it was of the shorter version. Both of yours, the short and long are so very elegant! Sadly, I do not have a serger, is this able to be made on a regular machine???
Hi Ruthie! I sewed my dress on a regular sewing machine. I only used the serger to finish the seam allowances and unfinished edges.
What a dress! I made one with the original pattern when it first came out. How I wish I had kept that pattern although I’m sure I wore out the dress itself because it was perfect — like yours!
WOW this is stunning! Thank you SO much for posting; I am now planning to make it for a wedding party (evening). I would really like the wrap to open as I walk to give a sort of split look/feel. Do you think I could that effect by maybe cutting front panels slightly differently?

I love your DVF wrap dress! I love the floral fabric you chose. Double brushed knit never looked so good!!! You look very sophisticated in it.
